The Bill of Materials uniquely identifies all the constituent parts of a product or deployment unit. The Deployment Manager needs to make sure that the tested and approved version of the software, and product enclosures are available for delivery, and mass production.
The final packaged product will consist of the software on some storage media, some documents or manuals, licensing agreement forms, and the packaging it self.
The Deployment Manager needs to ensure that all the items for manufacture are in their final approved state at the time of delivery to the manufacturer. The approved application and installation software will need to be virus checked and saved on some mass-producible storage medium (e.g. master CD). The manuals will need to be in their "camera ready" format. All the details of preparation times for the deliverable items is captured in the Deployment Plan.
Once all the component parts are in place, and verified to be complete, they can be handed over to the manufacturing organization for mass production and duplication.
Interestingly, the manufacturing process influences what is to be included on
the Bill of Materials. For example, if the product is to be shipped in ready
supplied boxes then the distinguishing features for a particular product could
be labels that are attached to the box. The item that will appear on the Bill of
Materials in that case will be "labels" rather than the
"box".
