The University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) is an upper-level educational institution with a distinct identity, whose primary role is to provide fair and equitable learning opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students. The university serves a diverse student population from the state, the nation and abroad, particularly from the Houston-Galveston metropolitan area, by offering programs on and off campus.

Beginning in 2006, the Bachelor of Science plan earned accreditation from the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) under its information systems (IS) curriculum guidelines. ABET is the nationwide accreditation body which certifies computing, information systems, and engineering programs in colleges and universities across the United States. In December 2006, the UHCL CIS program was the only IS program in Texas accredited by ABET. Currently, there are only twenty programs in the U.S. accredited by ABET under its IS curriculum.
